I like this:
My idea would be for it to work similarly to the Rich Text Object and allow you to insert images and formatted text and save or load a PDF document.

I'm not sure about re-loading, but definitely something with a few actions like "Insert text", "Insert image", "Line At", "Text At" could work. Or just an object which takes an RTF and converts it to PDF.

There is this $1500 library to do it. Also:

Can anyone see a library to do it that doesn't cost money?! Maybe you could do RTF->DVI/PS->PDF or something?

That's not a library though. And it can't be turned into one as it is GPL.

I'd post another link but their site doesn't appear to be working. Maybe it would be worth it if someone contacted the verypdf guys and asked for a discount? Or a dev here could drop the 1.5k, finance the extension development, and then charge for license for its use. It's not exactly a non-developer extension anyway.

Well what we could do is create a system where users can create PostScript files and convert them to PDF using the GPL Ghostscript. Ghostscript can be distributed with it as it is a separate program.
